The monument was created by the sculptor B. Bučas, to commemorate the writer and public figure J.Tumas–Vaižgantas from Rokiškis region. The monument was consecrated on 29 April, 1937.
Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas is one of the great Lithuanian writers. Vaižgantas’ creative legacy is the most abundant among the writers of his time. Juozas Tumas was born on 20 September, 1869 in Malaišiai village, Rokiškis county, in a farmer’s family. The environment of homeland provided J. Tumas-Vaižgantas with an extremely rich linguistic and ethnographic heritage, developed a sense of individuality and independence, love for people and optimism of life.
